Frequently Asked Questions Your Questions Answered.
The Art of Communication is how well we are able to communicate to pursuit of our goals in our workplace or community.
“Mastering the art of communication” means speaking and writing in English more skillfully and confidently, demonstrating knowledge, transmitting ideas and motivating others. Perez Apple & Company’s customized training and coaching programs target only the communication features that will have the greatest impact on attaining your professional goals.
What are the training and coaching programs like?
No two training or coaching programs are completely alike. Each individual or group training represents the different characteristics and goals of its speakers. The needs of a medical professional will be different from a business owner or company director as both the language, profession and performance goals are considered.
What communication features will I be working on?
Programs are as unique as your personal barriers to successful communication. An assessment determines the features that compromise your program. Communication features can include:
- Spoken and/or written communication skills
- Meeting and presentation skills
- Interpersonal communication skills
- Nonverbal communication skills
Accent Training, what is that?
Everyone speaks with an accent. Your accent tells people where you’re from or how many languages you speak. You may speak English with a regional accent or you may speak with an accent because English is not your first language. You may even speak Spanish with an English accent.
Accents are beautiful, colorful, and acceptable — unless they interfere with communication. In Accent Training, the goal is not to remove your accent; the objective is to address patterns of speech and pronunciation that prevent you from being clearly understood
What are other factors that contribute to not communicating?
Grammar, vocabulary, loudness and cultural influences affect your ability to be understood. Fluency in English can often be significantly improved by correctly combining certain words (collocations) and using them correctly. Your volume & pitch control, if determined by your cultural background, could be holding you back in English.
How do I make myself more clearly understood?
Understand the expectations of your listeners. In addition to correct grammar and word choice, English speakers/listeners expect to hear certain intonation patterns and sounds in order to understand what you are saying. English stress and intonation patterns are key to being clearly understood as are the pronunciation of final consonants and the lengthening of English stressed vowels.
What about written communication?
The same goes for writing. North American workplace writing is expressed within an expected format and organization of ideas. Writing is composed in a concise manner and logical order. Certain combinations of words are used to express ideas and get results. Good business writing considers the purpose, the reader, the best format, and the style and tone of well constructed language and sentences.
Does my language background matter?
No, since the target language is English. But each language presents features that are special to the speaker. German and Turkish speakers may struggle with the /v/ vs. /w/ sound distinction; Spanish speakers grapple with vowel length and rising/lowering pitch levels; a Mandarin speaker may speak without using articles.
Who is qualified to provide language training programs?
Professionals with a strong background in (phonetics, phonology and syntax) who hold advanced degrees in Linguistics, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL), and Speech and Language Pathologists are the most highly trained. Their education enables them to understand the structural components of both native and target languages and best provide both spoken and written language training.
